Bark Park Winterizing 11/01/2009
The Bark Park will be winterizing the water systems. Soon the water will be turned off to the fountain and hose. CommentsDave Costello 11/10/2009 8:57am
Being new to the area yesterday was my third visit to the park. .Unfortunately,my "Benny" who I have just adopted from Putnam Humane was chased by and mauled by a group of dogs while there. This morning he woke up limping and in a little bit of discomfort in his right hind leg.My experiance to say the least was miserable and I would like to say I think the owners of the three out of the ten or so dogs whom beat the hell out of him should be ashamed. There was one dog whom actually was trying to bite ond nip his legs while he was on his back.If this is to be tolerated at Sycamore, please let me know where a more calm or controlled run might be within the area, thank you,

Hi Dave, I also am sorry for your unpleasant experience at the park. Please read the blog in the October archives which dealt with a similar situation. Your dog's age, size, personality, breed, past history and socialization experiences will impact his comfort level and his play style. Your emotional state will influence the dog as well. I f you are fearful or uncertain he may be fearful or insecure and possibly become "prey" to the "pack". Educate yourself on types of dogplay and check out the rules and tips on this website and the following website-http://www.animal-link.org/parksafety.shtml for info. And remember, everyday is a new day at the park depending on the mix of dogs and the moods of the same dogs. I've had good days at the park and bad days. I watch the dogs in the park to gauge the mood and activity level and enter depending on my feelings and observing the body language of my dog. If he seems comfortable, I enter and stay close. Otherwise, I take a walk around the park. And not all dogs are meant to be dog park dogs and that has to be respected.

I have read the previous blog and it seems like I had the same problem that the other owner had with his dog.And that was nobody took responsibility for their dogs actions.Benny is a year old Beagle/Lab mix, barelty over twenty pounds with alot of energy. He is a runner, loves his tennis balls and gets along with other dogs loves poeple, kids and is the sweetest little guy you might ever have the good fortune to meet..To say that he "might not be" a dog park dog is a little much. The only thing that should be respected is Benny's "right" to go to a public park and not be harmed.Especially when his behavior or attitude was not to blame it was the other dogs "attitude' and "behavior".I have had dogs for the past twenty years so I think I'm not too bad understanding or getting a good "read' on their behavior.I read all the rules and the one where folks should keep their animals from ruining anothers experiance does not seem to be followed by some.I will take Robs advice and see how he does in the smaller enclosure.

The water is now off at the park. Be prepared to bring your own water! Please remember to bring home any containers you bring to the park or they will be discarded. And remember to SCOOP the POOP!
